Everything about my Wife / All About My Wife

All About My Wife (내 아내의 모든 것Nae anaeui modeun geot; MR: Nae anae ?i mod?n k?t) is a

2012 South Korean romantic comedy directed by Min Kyu-dong, about a timid husband who hires a professional Casanova to seduce his seemingly perfect but fearsome wife, hoping this will make her divorce him. Starring Im Soo-jung, Lee Sun-kyun and Ryu Seung-ryong,[3][4] the movie was released in theaters on May 17, 2012.

It is a remake of the Argentinean film Un novio para mi mujer ("A Boyfriend for My Wife").

Plot

After seven years of marriage, mild-mannered Doo-hyun (Lee Sun-kyun) is at the end of his rope. Jung-in (Im Soo-jung), his wife, is beautiful, sexy, and a fantastic cook, but drives her husband crazy with her endless nagging and complaining. He can’t even bring himself to ask for a divorce because of the fights that will follow. When Doo-hyun’s company transfers him out of state, it seems like his dream of getting away is coming true.

But to his horror, Jung-in surprises him by moving across the country to be with him. Desperate but too afraid to ask for a divorce, Doo-hyun recruits his next-door neighbor and legendary Casanova Sung-ki (Ryu Seung-ryong) to seduce his wife and make her leave him first. After scoping her out, Sung-ki is intrigued by the challenge and confidently agrees to seduce Jung-in as his career finale. Meanwhile, to give her something to do, Doo-hyun has already arranged for Jung-in to get a spot on the local radio station, shooting her mouth off about life's injustices. True to his reputation, Sung-ki eventually succeeds in grabbing Jung-in’s attention, and the two slowly develop feelings for each other. But though Doo-hyun asked for it, he grows to regret his decision and decides to spy on his wife and her lover.

Review

The movie starts out in Nagoya, Japan. Lee Doo Hyun (Lee Sun Kyun) is filming the scenery around him is filming the scenery around him when a small earthquake happens. He stumbles upon an extremely panicked Yeon Jung In (Im Soo Jung) and calms her down by taking her to the “safest place in Japan”. When the tremors start again sending Jung In cowering under a table, Doo Hyun laughs it off, asking if he could buy her lunch—“It’s really an honor to meet such a beautiful woman”.

It’s a really cute opener for a very entertaining movie. All About My Wife gives us the story of a man who’s come to the point where he wants a divorce but doesn’t know how to do it. Yeon Jung In is a character. She’s loud, talkative, and complains a lot about almost everything. Doo Hyun is a man who likes things quiet, he likes his alone time, and is embarrassed by Jung In’s constant complaints. Of course, she drives him nuts, but he can’t even talk to her about it because he’s afraid she’ll snap. Even though it’s a sad situation, I love how the movie approaches it with such light-heartedness. It doesn’t paint a sad picture or try to get you to see either Doo Hyun or Jung In as the cause of the rift in their relationship, but let’s you sit back and draw your own conclusions while enjoying the couple’s everyday interactions. And they are hilarious.

When an opportunity comes up at work for Doo Hyun to get transfered outside of Seoul, he practically begs for it…and gets it, too! Of course, trouble crops up again when Jung In follows him there and the escape he wanted so badly gets ruined. Enter Jang Sung Ki (Ryu Seung Ryong), the eccentric and seductive self-proclaimed “Casanova” who is literally flanked by women everywhere he goes and Doo Hyun gets a crazy idea. Hire Sung Ki to seduce his wife away. And so the movie goes following the three on this crazy journey about finding that maybe you don’t know the person closest to you as well as you think, that attitudes can be misleading, and that when it comes to love understanding and communication is key.

I really enjoyed this movie. Not only was it laugh-out-loud funny but it had touching moments as well. I can’t explain how much more I love Im Soo Jung after this because she plays her role so well. I wasn’t annoyed by her nagging character, Jung In, at all and even really enjoyed her while she yelled or went on a rant on why optimistic people are annoying. She was just great as someone who everyone seemed to find value in except for her husband. Lee Sun Kyung and Ryu Seong Ryong are a hilarious pair. Their interactions are so whacky and bat-shit insane, it’s so much fun whenever they appear on screen. You’ll enjoy seeing Lee who I find often times plays the cool-type with all the answers as a guy who is more often than not a bumbling, coward. And of course, Ryu shows how much more he can shine in this overly-dramatic, comedic role.
